Fun Family Tree Research

Knowing one’s family history is important and it is ultimately the parents' responsibility to instill this knowledge into the next generation.  Sometimes parents have a hard time gathering their thoughts or they don’t even know their own family history; however, all is not lost.  There are many resources available that can help create long-lasting memories to carry on to the next generation including Family History Centers, the Brigham Young University Family History and Genealogy Resources, and the Family Tree DNA.

The Family History Centers was founded in 1894 and has one of the largest databases to search for family trees that can be found.  The good news is that the services are completely free!  The FHC is the most popular resource to do family history research, and more that 1900 seekers come through their doors every day.  Their record collection is extensive, and they have over 36 million names in various families.  They also have an international genealogy log for those who have history overseas, that includes over 125 million names.  This would be the best place to start your search on their website.

The Brigham Young University Family History and Genealogy Resources website also has an extensive amount of resources including an area in which the patrons can donate information about their family history.  Submitting this information can hopefully connect families and find lost relatives.  The website also has access to birth, marriage and divorce certificates, obituaries, and census information.

The Family Tree DNA takes on a different approach to creating a family tree.  This approach does cost money; however, it allows one to find out which part of the world one’s ancestors came from both a maternal and paternal approach.  It is costly but it would be a fun way to discover and develop a family tree.
