Many people become interested in their ancestry when they are adults. One does not meet a lot of kids with interest on the subject. Children are often interested in their family history but simply do not know how to go about finding it out. Only when we get to adulthood and are able to research and learn that we realize we missed.
Genealogy provides your children a sense of connection, belonging. It will enhance and enrich their understanding of where they came from. They will realize, through research, what they have in common with their ancestors and what they don’t. The facts, once discovered could lead them to understand how they came to get to the place they are now, from geographically to emotionally and other facets of their personality.
Most kids live in the moment. They cannot relate to history, and do not really see the connection between world events and how they affect their family and lives, let alone, what happened years ago, and what effect and impact did these events had. It is not entirely their fault! It is up to us, to get the children involved in this project, which besides the benefits they will get from the process, it will definitely bring us families together as a unit, investigating our pasts and finding all the details we can to complete our own picture.
Genealogy is a wonderful tool that will help us all preserve our personal history and values. By letting our youngsters see the past, so to speak, we are ensuring that the legacy of mankind continues, or at least, for one family at a time.
