Family History

Family history is an interesting subject for many because it involves personal discovery. The first place to start is with yourself and what you know about your immediate family. Fill out all the branches that you are aware of in your family tree.

You can find a lot of information in your own home. Birth records, marriage records, baptismal records and even the family Bible might have the information that you are looking for. Even death certificates will have some information. Public records at the courthouse may have some of the information you are looking for. A lot of county courthouse have archive that hold a lot of historical records.

There are websites that will walk you step-by-step as you start researching your family history. Then there are also websites that will have some family trees already discovered. These websites are Ancestry.com. and Familytreesearch.com.

Once you have filled in what you know, ask family members, especially the older ones, what they remember. Then you can check online to see if anyone else has started family research on your family. If so, then contact them. If not, start you own. There are forms that you can download where all you have to do is fill in the blanks. If you don't want to use forms, get a notebook where you can keep all of the information that you find.

Find an ancestor that interests you and follow his or her family. Find out who this person married, and whom their children were. Old census records will have information on ancestors. Census records will have a person's name, the spouse of that person, children and their ages.

Just remember that when you are researching your family records, there may be times when you will be stumped. The most important thing is to have fun.
